LIPPI INTERVIEW – Marcello Lippi has given an interview to calciosaudita.it. The World Cup-winning coach with Italy talked about Spalletti’s National Team, Arab and Italian football.
The interview
Mr. Lippi, the Italian Football Federation has entrusted the Azzurri bench to Luciano Spalletti, what do you think of this choice?
“I think very highly of it. Luciano is a great coach and a good person. I truly believe that the FIGC made a wise decision. I’m confident that Spalletti will field the right players and that his Italy will give us satisfaction.”
It seems that Spalletti wants to rely on at least a couple of “blocks” of players who also play together at their clubs.
“I fully support his idea. Blocks are always positive because the players train together in their clubs and therefore know each other perfectly. This can only be good for the Italy squad.”
Roberto Mancini left the Italian National Team for Saudi Arabia’s…
“I’m not used to judging other people’s choices and I won’t do it in this case either. I can say that Roberto is a good person and he must have had his reasons.”
During your two stints as Italy’s coach, did you receive other offers?
“Certainly, always. But even though I listened to them, I always considered it right to honor the commitments I had made.”
How was it being the coach of China?
“An interesting experience, not just football-wise, but also in life. Certainly, I didn’t expect to achieve extraordinary results.”
What do you think of the explosion of Saudi football?
“It surprised everyone and deserves attention. The incredible thing is that it seems to have unlimited funds, and this is a factor that needs to be understood and studied. However, I feel compelled to add that achieving significant results requires long-term commitment and planning. It won’t be as easy as it seems now.”
And Serie A?
“Our league remains highly competitive. At the moment, I see Inter and Milan as strong teams. The Milanese clubs are showing they have an extra gear and, in my opinion, they will be the ones competing for the title.”
What about Rome-based teams?
“Both Roma and Lazio are strong, and despite a complicated start, they will emerge. Sarri and Mourinho are great coaches, and they will make the most of the resources at their disposal.”
And Juventus?
“They have the usual characteristics: great fighting spirit and an interesting mix of young and established players. Plus, they don’t have European competitions, so they could be the third team fighting for the title.”
