Shabbar Abbas, dressed in dark trousers, a light blue polo shirt, with a downcast gaze and a thick mustache, entered the courtroom of the Court of Assizes in Reggio Emilia at exactly 9:56 this morning. He was escorted by six prison police officers, and this was his first time appearing in person at the trial for the murder of his 18-year-old daughter Saman, after being extradited from Pakistan to Italy a week ago.
Accompanied by his lawyers Enrico Della Capanna and Simone Servillo, Shabbar took his seat in the middle. An interpreter stood behind him. Immediately, Cristina Beretti, the presiding judge, asked Shabbar if he agreed to be filmed by the cameras and media present in the courtroom.
However, the defendant denied permission. The hearing of the trial, which resumed after the summer break, is currently underway. At the beginning, Shabbar’s lawyers requested to review some testimonies from the judicial police that had already been heard when Shabbar’s case was initially dismissed (and then reinstated after his arrest in Pakistan).
